Utility Network Implementation for Water System (Pilot)

DCSE performed a Utility Network pilot study for IRWD’s water system. Utility Network has many advantages when compared to the traditional geometric network. It allows for quick information delivery and is scalable to large utilities. It allows the user to model how components of the system are connected. It can represent the dense areas of the system without map clutter. Its structure enforces data integrity and reduces data entry errors. It enables advanced network analysis and provides a comprehensive view of the network. And it’s fully 3D-enabled.

As part of the project, DCSE migrated IRWD’s water data into the Utility Network. DCSE, using elevation data from the county, assigned z-values to all vertices in the network. Within the network, DCSE also configured subnetworks for use in tracing. These subnetworks were set up as source/sink to define the flow direction during the trace. Containers were also created for certain facilities within the study area. Containers show minor detail at a higher level, and users can enter the container to see more details or explore related data.
